The small sicilian mountain village Mineo is host to the ‘Centro di Accoglienza per Richiedenti Asilo’ (CARA) - a centre for reception of asylum seekers. Refugees who arrive in Italy by boat are transferred to residences inside the CARA, in order to wait for the validation of their asylum applications. With more than 3,200 mi- grants from Eritrea, Sudan, Nigeria, Gambia, Liberia, Afghanistan, Syria, Pakistan and elsewhere living in the centre, the CARA Mineo is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
The migrants at the centre are stuck in bureaucratic limbo as they wait for up to two years for their asylum applications to be processed.
The shown images were created in the surroundings of the camp.
